Banning plastic..

One of the good things that himachal govt. has done is banning use of polythene. So if you go to the sabzi mandi the vegetables are sold in paper bags only :)
This is a lesson which should be learnt by retail giants like Reliance Fresh and Food World(I named them only because they are near my house) which make heavy use of plastic bags.It is not so hard to implement if a joint effort is made by all the retail giants. It may be difficult in the beginning for consumers (long standing habits are difficult to break) but once it starts finding acceptance(which it surely would when they would have no other choice) it would not be difficult for them. These giant super stores are best suited to make the change. The govt. faces political opposition from the plastic bag industry to implement any ban on plastic bags. So it would not do it.
The retail giants face no such opposition .It will also help them to improve their image as the green consciousness increases in the indian middle class who are their main customers. They should promote greener alternatives like jute bags.
May be they can learn from the experience of Wall -Mart.
After all it's part of the corporate responsibility .Is n't it ?

Some quotes ....

Even in the worm that crawls in the earth there glows a divine spark. When you slaughter a creature, you slaughter God. -Isaac Bashevis Singer, Writer, Nobel laureate (1904-1991)

This is another great difference between our civilization and yours. You admire the man who pushes his way to the top in any walk of life, while we admire the man who abandons his ego. (Seven Years in Tibet –Movie)

A speech for the planet

"We, the human species, are confronting a planetary emergency - a threat to the survival of our civilization that is gathering ominous and destructive potential even as we gather here. But there is hopeful news as well: we have the ability to solve this crisis and avoid the worst - though not all - of its consequences, if we act boldly, decisively and quickly."
No ,this is not a dialogue from a Hollywood sci-fi movie but lines taken from Al Gore's acceptance speech for jointly winning the Nobel peace prize for 2007
Arguably the most important debate of recent times has been that concerning global warming and environment. Al Gore jointly won the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for his campaign to fight global warming.
It's the time for countries and individuals to act before it becomes too late.
